Lesson 1: Getting started with ChatGPT

This is the real first lesson of the ChatGPT course, fully open as your free trial. In about 10 minutes, you open ChatGPT for the first time, understand what it can (and can't) do, and hold your first conversation.

By the end of this lesson, you can:

  • Say what ChatGPT is, in one simple sentence
  • Open ChatGPT and find the 5 essentials of the screen
  • Start a new chat and continue it with follow-up questions
  • Know what to check — and what never to paste into a chat

1 · What ChatGPT is

ChatGPT is a conversational AI assistant: you write to it in normal language, and it answers in text. Think of it as a very well-read assistant who writes fast — but who can sometimes be confidently wrong, so important answers always deserve a check.

It does this well

  • Explain a topic simply, at your level
  • Draft and improve emails, texts and documents
  • Summarize long texts and pull out the key points
  • Brainstorm ideas, plans and questions

Keep this in mind

  • It can make mistakes — verify facts, dates and numbers that matter
  • Never paste passwords, bank details or private information
  • It doesn't know your life — give it the context it needs

2 · Open ChatGPT and spot the 5 essentials

Go to ChatGPT and sign in — the free version is enough for this lesson. Before typing anything, find these five things. You will use them in every single lesson:

  1. 1
New chatStart a fresh conversation for each new topic — it keeps the answers focused.
  2. 2
SidebarYour past conversations live here — you can reopen them anytime.
  3. 3
Model nameShown at the top of the screen. The free version is plenty to begin with.
  4. 4
Message boxAt the bottom — this is where you write your question, called a “prompt”.
  5. 5
Send buttonClick it, or press Enter. ChatGPT answers right there in the conversation.

3 · Your first conversation

A conversation is not one question — it's a back-and-forth. ChatGPT remembers what was said earlier in the same chat, so you can refine instead of starting over. Here is what a first exchange looks like:

YouExplain photosynthesis like I'm 12, in 5 sentences maximum.
ChatGPTPlants make their own food. They catch sunlight with their leaves, drink water through their roots, and breathe in air. Using the sun's energy, they turn water and air into sugar so they can grow — and they release the oxygen we breathe.
YouNow ask me 3 questions to check I understood.
ChatGPTWith pleasure! 1) What do the leaves catch? 2) Where does the water come from? 3) What gas do plants release? …

Notice the follow-up: “Now ask me…” — you did not repeat the topic, because ChatGPT kept the context of the chat. That habit — ask, read, follow up — is the core skill of this whole course.

4 · Practice: your first 3 prompts

Copy one of these starters, paste it into ChatGPT, and adapt the part in brackets. There is no wrong answer — the goal is simply to have your first real conversation.

Understand

Explain [how a microwave works] to me like I'm a beginner, in 5 short sentences, then give me one example from everyday life.

Summarize

Here is a text: [paste your text]. Summarize it in 3 bullet points, then tell me the single most important idea.

Get ideas

Give me 10 ideas for [a birthday gift for a friend who loves cooking], between $20 and $50, and rank them from most original to safest.
